FD vs Inflation
A quick visual guide to checking fixed deposit maturity against inflation-adjusted value.
Watch visual guideSWP and FD interest payouts are two common ways to think about retirement income in India. Both can create regular cash flow, but the calculation logic is different.
Use the SWP Calculator to test withdrawals from a corpus. Use the FD Calculator to estimate fixed deposit maturity or payout interest. If you are still estimating the corpus first, start with the Retirement Calculator India.
Quick difference
An SWP withdraws a fixed amount from an investment corpus every month. The remaining corpus may keep growing or falling based on returns and withdrawals.
An FD payout usually pays interest periodically while the principal remains locked until maturity. The income is based on the deposit amount and FD interest rate.
FD monthly income formula
For a simple monthly payout estimate:
Monthly FD payout = Principal x annual interest rate / 12
For example, if Rs 50,00,000 is placed in an FD at 7%:
Monthly payout = Rs 50,00,000 x 7% / 12 = about Rs 29,167
This is a simplified estimate. Actual bank payouts can vary because of compounding rules, product terms, TDS, tax slab, premature withdrawal penalties, and rounding.
SWP monthly income formula
An SWP is usually estimated month by month:
Monthly return rate = annual return / 12 / 100
Each month:
- Corpus grows by the monthly return rate.
- Monthly withdrawal is deducted.
- Remaining corpus carries forward.
If returns are positive and withdrawals are moderate, the corpus may last longer. If withdrawals are high or returns are weak, the corpus can deplete.
Which is better for retirement income?
FD payout may feel simpler because the income estimate is easy to understand and principal is generally visible. It can suit conservative buckets, emergency reserves, or short-term income needs.
SWP can be useful when the investor wants a planned withdrawal from a larger retirement portfolio. It may provide flexibility, but outcomes depend on market returns, asset allocation, tax rules, and the sequence of returns.
Neither option is automatically better. The right choice depends on income need, risk tolerance, tax slab, time horizon, and whether the corpus must be preserved.
Example comparison
Assume a retirement corpus of Rs 50,00,000.
FD payout example:
- Interest rate: 7%
- Estimated monthly interest: about Rs 29,167
- Principal is expected back at maturity, subject to bank and scheme terms
SWP example:
- Expected return: 8%
- Monthly withdrawal: Rs 35,000
- Corpus can rise or fall depending on the actual return path
- A bad sequence of returns can reduce sustainability
Try both examples in the FD Calculator and SWP Calculator. Then compare the results with your retirement corpus estimate from the Retirement Calculator India.
Inflation check
A major retirement-income mistake is ignoring inflation. A monthly income of Rs 40,000 today may not buy the same lifestyle after 10 years.
Use the Inflation Calculator to estimate future expenses. If income stays fixed while expenses rise, the real purchasing power of that income falls.
Practical planning approach
Many retirees do not need an all-or-nothing choice.
A practical approach may separate money into buckets:
- Emergency and near-term expenses in safer instruments
- Medium-term income planning using FD, debt funds, or other suitable products
- Long-term inflation protection through assets selected with professional advice
The calculator result should be treated as a planning estimate, not a recommendation.

Assumptions
- FD payout examples use a simplified annual rate divided by payout frequency.
- SWP examples assume a fixed monthly withdrawal and fixed expected return.
- Inflation, tax, TDS, product charges, exit loads, premature withdrawal rules, market volatility, and changing expenses are not fully modeled.
- Actual bank, mutual fund, and tax outcomes can differ.
