FIRE Number
A quick visual guide to estimating the corpus needed for financial independence.
Watch visual guideA retirement calculator helps estimate how much corpus you may need by retirement age and whether your current savings plan is enough. It is different from a basic SIP calculator because retirement planning has two stages: building the corpus before retirement and withdrawing from it after retirement.
Use the Retirement Calculator India to enter current age, retirement age, expenses, current corpus, monthly investment, expected return, inflation, and life expectancy.
Retirement corpus formula
The calculator first estimates future expenses:
Future monthly expenses = Current monthly expenses x (1 + inflation) ^ years to retirement
Annual expenses at retirement = Future monthly expenses x 12
Then it estimates retirement corpus using the real post-retirement return:
Real return = (1 + return after retirement) / (1 + inflation) - 1
Retirement corpus needed = Present value of annual retirement expenses for the retirement period
This means the corpus target changes when inflation, retirement age, life expectancy, or post-retirement return changes.
Example
Assume:
- Current age: 35
- Retirement age: 60
- Life expectancy: 85
- Monthly expenses today: Rs 1,00,000
- Inflation: 6%
- Return before retirement: 10%
- Return after retirement: 7%
The calculator estimates expenses at retirement, corpus needed for 25 retirement years, projected corpus from current savings, and the monthly investment required to close any gap.
Why inflation matters
Retirement expenses are often underestimated because today's expenses are easier to visualize. At 6% annual inflation, the same lifestyle can cost much more after 20 or 25 years.
Use the Inflation Calculator to test how education, rent, groceries, medical costs, and general living expenses may change over time.
Retirement calculator vs FIRE calculator
The FIRE Number Calculator asks how soon you may reach financial independence based on current expenses, investments, monthly investment, return, inflation, and withdrawal rate.
The retirement calculator starts with a planned retirement age and answers:
- What will monthly expenses look like at retirement?
- What retirement corpus may be required?
- What corpus may existing investments and monthly contributions grow to?
- What is the estimated gap?
- How much monthly investment may be needed?
Both tools are useful, but the retirement calculator is better when retirement age and life expectancy are known inputs.
Where SWP fits
After estimating the required retirement corpus, use the SWP Calculator to test monthly withdrawals.
For example, a corpus may look enough at retirement age, but the withdrawal plan can still fail if:
- Monthly withdrawals are too high
- Returns are lower than expected
- Inflation is higher than expected
- The retirement period is longer than planned

Assumptions
- Expenses are inflated annually.
- Monthly investment is fixed until retirement.
- Pre-retirement and post-retirement returns are fixed.
- Retirement corpus uses real return after inflation.
- Taxes, medical emergencies, changing lifestyle, market volatility, asset allocation, and sequence-of-return risk are not included.
