PPF vs NPS vs FD
A quick visual guide to choosing between PPF, NPS, and fixed deposits in India.
Watch visual guideAn NPS calculator helps estimate how National Pension System contributions may grow by retirement age and how the final corpus may be split between lump sum withdrawal and annuity purchase.
Use the NPS Calculator India to enter current age, retirement age, contribution amount, current NPS corpus, expected return, lump sum percentage, annuity percentage, and expected annuity rate.
NPS corpus formula
The calculator estimates NPS corpus month by month.
Monthly return rate = expected annual return / 12 / 100
Each month:
- Existing corpus grows by the monthly return rate.
- Monthly equivalent contribution is added.
- The balance carries forward to the next month.
If yearly contribution mode is selected:
Monthly equivalent contribution = yearly contribution / 12
This keeps monthly and yearly contribution modes comparable.
Lump sum and annuity split
At retirement, the estimated corpus is split using the entered percentages.
Lump sum withdrawal = retirement corpus x lump sum withdrawal percentage
Annuity corpus = retirement corpus x annuity purchase percentage
Estimated monthly pension = annuity corpus x annuity rate / 12
The calculator caps the combined exit split at 100%. If annuity and lump sum percentages exceed 100%, the lump sum share is capped after preserving the annuity share.
Example
Assume:
- Current age: 30
- Retirement age: 60
- Monthly contribution: Rs 10,000
- Expected annual return: 10%
- Lump sum withdrawal: 60%
- Annuity purchase: 40%
- Expected annuity rate: 6%
The calculator estimates retirement corpus, lump sum withdrawal, annuity corpus, and monthly pension from the annuity corpus.
NPS vs PPF vs FD
NPS is retirement-focused and market-linked. PPF is a long-term government-backed savings scheme. FD is a fixed deposit product with simpler payout or maturity estimates.
