Net Worth Milestones
A quick visual guide to tracking net worth milestones from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1 crore.
Watch visual guideA net worth tracker helps you see one simple number: what you own minus what you owe. It is useful before using a retirement calculator, FIRE calculator, or investment planner because it shows your current starting point.
Use the Net Worth Tracker to enter assets, liabilities, categories, and values. The tracker stores data in your browser, lets you save local snapshots, and supports JSON and CSV export.
Net worth formula
Net worth is calculated as:
Net worth = total assets - total liabilities
Total assets = cash + investments + retirement accounts + property + other assets
Total liabilities = loans + credit cards + unpaid obligations + other debt
Debt to assets = total liabilities / total assets x 100
What to include as assets
Common asset categories include:
- Cash and bank balances
- Emergency fund
- Mutual funds, ETFs, stocks, or bonds
- Retirement accounts
- PPF, NPS, EPF, or pension balances
- Fixed deposits or recurring deposits
- Property value
- Gold or other major holdings
Use current estimates. For market-linked assets, values may change daily. For property or private assets, use conservative estimates and update them periodically.
What to include as liabilities
Common liability categories include:
- Home loan outstanding
- Car loan outstanding
- Personal loan outstanding
- Education loan outstanding
- Credit card dues
- Borrowed money or unpaid obligations
Use outstanding balance, not the original loan amount. For loans, you can use the EMI Calculator, Home Loan Calculator, or Loan Pre-payment Calculator to understand repayment schedules.
Why snapshots help
One net worth number is useful, but snapshots show progress.
For example, if your net worth rises because investments increased and debt reduced, the trend is healthier than a one-time value. If net worth rises only because an asset estimate is inflated, the snapshot still needs review.
The tracker keeps local snapshots so you can record your position every month or quarter.
JSON and CSV export
The Net Worth Tracker stores data in localStorage on the same browser. There is no server account or cloud sync.
Use JSON export when you want to back up your tracker or move it to another browser. JSON includes current rows and saved snapshots.
Use CSV export when you want the current assets and liabilities in a spreadsheet. CSV export is simpler and does not include the full snapshot history.
How net worth connects to FIRE
Your FIRE progress depends on the gap between current investments and your FIRE number.
After tracking your net worth, use the FIRE Number Calculator to estimate:
- FIRE number today
- Current progress
- Current gap
- Estimated years to FIRE
- Projected FIRE age
Not every asset may be usable for FIRE. For example, a self-occupied home may be part of net worth but may not be easy to use for monthly expenses. Separate liquid investments from lifestyle assets when making serious plans.
How net worth connects to retirement
Use the Retirement Calculator India after you know your current corpus. Your net worth tracker can help identify retirement-focused assets such as EPF, NPS, PPF, mutual funds, and fixed deposits.
If you are comparing savings products, use the PPF vs NPS vs FD Calculator. If you are estimating systematic withdrawals, use the SWP Calculator.
Common mistakes
Do not count the same asset twice. For example, do not count an investment account total and then count each fund inside it again.
Do not ignore liabilities attached to assets. A property with an outstanding loan should include both the estimated property value and the remaining loan balance.
Do not treat all net worth as liquid. Some assets may be locked, taxable, illiquid, volatile, or difficult to sell.
Do not forget short-term dues such as credit cards, unpaid taxes, or personal obligations.
FAQs
How often should I update net worth?
Monthly or quarterly is usually enough for personal tracking. Daily tracking can make normal market movement feel more important than it is.
Should I include my home in net worth?
You can include it as an asset and include the home loan outstanding as a liability. For FIRE planning, consider separating lifestyle assets from liquid investments.
Is net worth the same as retirement corpus?
No. Net worth is assets minus liabilities. Retirement corpus is the amount expected to fund future expenses. Some net worth may not be usable for retirement income.
Is the tracker data uploaded?
No. The tracker stores data locally in your browser. Use JSON export if you want a backup.
Assumptions
- Values are manually entered by the user.
- Asset values can change and may not match real-time market prices.
- Liabilities should use outstanding balance.
- Local snapshots are stored in the current browser only.
- CSV export contains current rows; JSON export contains current rows and snapshots.
- Taxes, selling costs, loan closure charges, and liquidity limits are not included.
