Salary Slip vs CTC
See why CTC, gross salary, deductions, and monthly in-hand salary are different.
Watch visual guideYour offer letter may show CTC, but your monthly salary slip shows earnings, deductions, and net pay. These two documents answer different questions.
CTC tells you the company's total annual cost. A salary slip tells you what was earned and deducted for a specific month.

Why CTC is not monthly in-hand salary
CTC can include items that are not paid to you every month, such as:
- Employer PF contribution
- Gratuity
- Annual bonus or variable pay
- Insurance premium
- One-time joining bonus
- Retention bonus
- Other benefits
Some of these are valuable, but they are not the same as monthly bank credit.

Monthly In-Hand
₹94,276
Annual In-Hand
₹11,31,312
| Deduction | Annual | Monthly |
|---|---|---|
| Employee PF | ₹21,600 | ₹1,800 |
| Professional Tax | ₹2,400 | ₹200 |
| Income Tax | ₹0 | ₹0 |
What a salary slip usually shows
A salary slip usually has two sides: earnings and deductions.
Earnings can include:
- Basic salary
- HRA
- Special allowance
- Bonus or incentive, if paid that month
- Reimbursements, depending on company policy
Deductions can include:
- Employee PF
- Professional tax
- Income tax or TDS
- Insurance or other recoveries
- Leave or attendance adjustments
Employer PF can confuse the comparison
Employer PF is often included in CTC, but it is not deducted from your monthly gross salary in the same way as employee PF. It is an employer-side cost that goes to your retirement account.
Employee PF is usually deducted from your salary and reduces monthly in-hand pay.
This is why two employees with the same CTC can get different monthly salaries if one company uses capped PF and another uses full basic PF.
Gratuity is usually not monthly cash
Gratuity may be shown inside CTC, especially in structured offer letters. But it is usually not paid every month. It is a long-service benefit and normally becomes payable only when eligibility conditions are met.
If gratuity is included in CTC, subtract it while estimating monthly gross salary.
How to compare offer letter and payslip
Use this flow:
- Start with annual CTC.
- Remove employer PF and gratuity if included in CTC.
- Remove variable pay if it is not paid monthly.
- Estimate monthly gross salary.
- Subtract employee PF, professional tax, and income tax.
- Compare the result with actual monthly net pay.
Useful tools before creating a payslip
If you are creating a salary slip from an offer letter, do the calculation in this order:
- Use the India CTC to In-Hand Salary Calculator to estimate monthly gross and net pay.
- Check PF impact with the EPF / PF Contribution Calculator if your company uses capped or full-basic PF.
- Create the final document with the India Salary Slip Generator.
This avoids a common mistake: entering annual CTC directly as monthly payroll income.
Bottom line
CTC, gross salary, taxable income, and in-hand salary are different numbers. Use the India CTC to In-Hand Salary Calculator to break your offer into monthly pay components before comparing it with your salary slip.
