Rent Receipt for HRA
A visual checklist for creating rent receipts used in HRA documentation.
Watch visual guideIf you claim HRA exemption under the old tax regime, rent receipts are one of the most common documents your employer may ask for. But a rent receipt should not be treated as a casual note. It should clearly show who paid rent, who received it, when it was paid, and for which property.
What a rent receipt usually includes
A rent receipt commonly includes:
- Tenant name
- Landlord name
- Rental property address
- Rent amount
- Rent period, such as April 2026
- Payment date
- Payment mode
- Landlord signature or acknowledgement
- Landlord PAN when required by employer or tax reporting rules
Some employers may ask for additional documents such as rental agreement, bank transfer proof, or landlord PAN details, especially when annual rent is high.

Why rent receipts matter for HRA
HRA exemption is generally available when:
- You are salaried.
- You receive HRA as part of salary.
- You pay rent for residential accommodation.
- You choose the old tax regime.
The exemption is not based on rent alone. It depends on the least of actual HRA received, rent paid minus 10% of salary, and 40% or 50% of salary depending on city category.
Rent paid to parents or relatives
If you pay rent to a parent or relative, keep the arrangement genuine and well documented. Bank transfer proof, rental agreement, rent receipts, and proper income reporting by the landlord can become important.
Avoid creating rent receipts only for tax saving without an actual rent arrangement. That can create trouble during employer verification or tax scrutiny.
Monthly vs yearly receipts
Monthly receipts are easier to match with salary months and bank transfers. A yearly receipt may be accepted in some workflows, but it can be harder to verify if payment dates and monthly rent are unclear.
For a clean record, keep:
- Monthly rent receipt.
- Bank transfer proof.
- Rental agreement.
- Landlord PAN details when applicable.
- Employer declaration copy, if submitted.
Bottom line
Rent receipts support your HRA claim, but they work best when backed by a real rent arrangement and clear payment trail. Use the HRA Exemption Calculator to estimate the exemption, then create a clean receipt with the Rent Receipt Generator.
