Watch visual guideProfessional tax is a state or local levy that can reduce salary credited to your bank account. It is different from income tax, employee PF and employer PF. There is no single monthly professional-tax amount for every Indian employee.
Use the India CTC to In-Hand Salary Calculator to select the tax year, state, salary structure and tax regime. The result shows the professional-tax rule and source used; some jurisdictions need payroll confirmation or an entered annual amount.
Which state should I select?
Use the applicable employment jurisdiction confirmed by payroll, not automatically your permanent address or the employer's head office. Remote work and transfers may need individual review. The Karnataka official FAQ addresses salary paid by an out-of-state head office.
Why February can differ
For a non-exempt employee meeting Karnataka's monthly threshold, the modeled schedule charges Rs 200 in ordinary months and Rs 300 in February. Maharashtra also has February adjustments for relevant categories, but its thresholds differ. An annual average is not the exact deduction on every payslip.
Read the Karnataka department guidance and confirm exemptions and actual monthly wages with payroll. Manual payroll overrides take precedence over the calculator schedule.
West Bengal changes during 2026-27
Final Notification 1607-F.T., dated 16 September 2026, changes employee rates from 1 October 2026. The August notification was a draft; other categories have different commencement dates.
For constant monthly salary of Rs 45,000:
- April to September 2026: Rs 200 per month, total Rs 1,200.
- October 2026 to March 2027: Rs 140 per month, total Rs 840.
- Full 2026-27 professional tax: Rs 2,040.
- Historical FY 2025-26 at the same salary: Rs 2,400.
This is the employee entry, not a self-employed schedule. See the final Gazette, publicly hosted copy and historical department schedule.
Local rules and eligibility
Tamil Nadu users can select Chennai or a standard schedule confirmed by payroll. Other council revisions need the actual annual payroll amount. See the Chennai schedule and standard-schedule FAQ.
Punjab development-tax eligibility must be confirmed separately. Age alone or zero income tax after rebate does not establish exemption. See the Punjab official eligibility FAQ.
For Goa, enter local payroll tax or confirm payroll deducts nothing for your jurisdiction. The CAG local-body audit records profession-tax collections; it does not establish a universal employee slab or exemption.
Does professional tax reduce income tax?
Professional tax paid reduces take-home in either regime. In the salary model it reduces taxable salary only under the old regime. Do not subtract it twice from cash salary: the tax deduction reduces the income-tax base, while the payroll deduction is the amount paid.
Consult the Income-tax Act, 2025 for current-year provisions and the regime comparison guide for payroll-versus-tax deductions.
Joining or leaving during the year
In the India calculator, select first and last employed months, inclusive. Supported monthly schedules use those months, including February and West Bengal's October change.
Annual and half-year local taxes cannot always be prorated safely. Enter tax paid for the selected period when requested. The annual override and employment-period total are different inputs.
The period summary assumes whole months and constant salary. It excludes earlier-employer salary, other income and partial-month days. Annualized tables and the payslip draft remain full-year estimates. Zero tax alongside an incomplete-estimate warning is not a verified exemption.
