Watch visual guideAn insurance XIRR calculator helps estimate the real annualized return from insurance products where premiums and payouts happen on different dates. This is useful for endowment plans, ULIPs, money-back policies, guaranteed income plans, and policies with surrender value.
Use the Insurance XIRR Calculator to enter premium amount, premium frequency, premium paying years, maturity value, surrender value, and interim payouts.
What XIRR means
XIRR is the annualized return from dated cash flows.
Premiums are negative cash flows because money goes out.
Maturity value, surrender value, money-back payouts, guaranteed income, and ULIP fund value are positive cash flows because money comes in.
XIRR is the annualized rate where the net present value of all these cash flows is approximately zero.
Why insurance XIRR matters
Headline maturity values can look attractive, but they do not always show the real annual return. XIRR helps because it considers:
- Premium timing
- Premium frequency
- Policy duration
- Money-back payouts
- Surrender value
- Maturity value
This makes it easier to compare insurance-linked savings products with other options.
Endowment plan XIRR
For an endowment plan, enter all premiums as outflows and maturity value as the final inflow. If the policy has bonuses or loyalty additions, include them in the maturity value only if you reasonably expect to receive them.
ULIP XIRR
For a ULIP, use the actual fund value or expected fund value as the positive cash flow. If you are checking current return, enter the current fund value as surrender value with today’s date.
Money-back policy XIRR
For a money-back policy, add each money-back payment as an interim payout. Then add the final maturity value on the maturity date.
Compare with other tools
Use the SIP Calculator to compare policy XIRR with market-linked monthly investments.
Use the FD Calculator to compare policy XIRR with a fixed deposit estimate.
Assumptions
- Premiums are treated as negative cash flows.
- Payouts are treated as positive cash flows.
- XIRR is annualized and date-sensitive.
- Surrender value replaces maturity value if a valid surrender date and value are entered.
- Life cover value, tax benefits, GST, mortality charges, fund charges, bonuses not entered as payouts, and claim benefits are not included.
