Watch visual guideGratuity is often shown inside CTC, but it is not paid every month. This is one reason your monthly in-hand salary can be lower than the headline CTC.
If gratuity is included in CTC, it is usually treated as a future benefit or employer-side cost, not monthly cash salary.
Standard gratuity formula
Reviewed 27 October 2026: this is a simplified offer-letter/payroll illustration, not a complete statutory wage or eligibility assessment. The Labour Ministry's 2026 Social Security Code FAQs address wage definitions and fixed-term employee eligibility, including the one-year contract-service case. A 4.81% CTC provision or basic-only example does not establish the legally payable amount for every worker.
For covered monthly-salaried employees, the formula uses applicable last-drawn wages:
- Gratuity = applicable last-drawn monthly wage x 15 / 26 x service used
For exits before 21 November 2025, the tool uses a basic-plus-DA historical estimate. For exits from that date, revised statutory wages can include retaining allowance and classified wage add-backs. The Ministry FAQ says the revised final wage applies to the overall service calculation: do not split service into old-wage and new-wage years. A payroll-confirmed final wage overrides the component estimate. Gratuity wages do not inherit the PF wage ceiling.
For ordinary covered cases, completed years plus a part exceeding six months determine the amount. Exactly six extra months does not round up. Service eligibility is checked separately, before rounding.
Eligibility and special cases
For the specific four-year question, read Gratuity after 4 years and 240 days: eligibility and exceptions. A calendar duration or amount-rounding rule should not be treated as an automatic approval of a disputed claim.
- Regular monthly-salaried employees ordinarily need five years of continuous service. Four years and seven months does not automatically become eligible just because the amount formula rounds service. Day-count and disputed continuous-service cases need professional review.
- Direct fixed-term employees whose contract expires under the current Code are modeled as eligible after one year under that contract, with pro-rata service. Workers supplied through a contractor are not automatically direct fixed-term employees.
- Death or disablement removes the five-year minimum. Current death cases use pro-rata service; the tool does not determine nominees, medical eligibility or legal entitlements.
- Seasonal, piece-rated, working-journalist, government-service, forfeiture and re-employment-after-disablement cases are outside this standard model.
The calculator models a Rs 20 lakh statutory payout ceiling, based on the Ministry guidance. Better contractual benefits can exceed that amount and require separate payroll calculation. This is not a tax-exemption calculation. The alternate 15/30 illustration does not establish entitlement or calculate income-tax exemption.
Joining dates, leaving dates and continuous service
The calculator now accepts joining and leaving dates as an alternative to manual years and months. It includes the leaving date as the last day employed and shows calendar tenure in years, months and days. The leaving date selects the wage rules; a later payment date does not change the service period. For direct fixed-term expiry, use the relevant contract start and confirm any aggregation of contracts with payroll.
Calendar anniversaries clamp month-end dates, including leap-day starts. An ordinary amount at exactly six extra calendar months does not round up, while one additional day can change rounding. For current pro-rata cases, date mode estimates completed years plus residual days divided by days to the next service anniversary. This convention is disclosed for payroll confirmation, not asserted as a universal settlement method.
Dates alone cannot prove continuous service or actual worked days. Section 54 of the Social Security Code covers specified interruptions and deemed-service tests. Do not automatically subtract leave or absence. A disputed four-year/day-count claim needs payroll or legal review; meeting a day-count reference does not automatically approve gratuity.
The optional reference panel accepts payroll-credited days in the preceding twelve- and six-month windows. It shows the applicable non-seasonal benchmarks, without inferring credited days from calendar dates or changing the review status. It does not handle seasonal-service tests or decide which absence records qualify.
Revised wages are not simply half of CTC
The optional advanced estimate takes included wages and payroll-classified exclusions under clauses (a)-(i). Add-back = max(0, exclusions - 0.5 x (included wages + exclusions)). Classification matters; employer PF and statutory bonus may be relevant, while gratuity, ESI and annual performance incentives should not be blindly included. Non-cash benefits and uncertain classifications require a payroll-confirmed final wage. Read the March 2026 Ministry FAQ.

Annual In-Hand

| Professional Tax | ₹2,500 | ₹208 |
| Income Tax | ₹0 | ₹0 |
Example
Suppose your monthly basic salary is Rs 45,000 and you complete 5 years and 7 months of service.
Assume statutory coverage, ordinary resignation, confirmed continuous service, no DA or retaining allowance, and no wage add-back. This is a simplified example, not every worker's statutory wage.
Because extra months are more than 6, the service period may be rounded to 6 years for the estimate.
Estimated gratuity:
- Rs 45,000 x 15 / 26 x 6 = about Rs 1,55,769
This is an estimate. Actual payout can depend on eligibility, employer policy, statutory limits, and final settlement rules.
Why gratuity reduces monthly in-hand
When gratuity is included in CTC, the employer may subtract it from the amount available for monthly gross salary.
Our salary calculator retains a simplified 4.81% of annual basic provision unless you enter a custom annual provision. That is an employer budgeting assumption, not the settlement calculator above, and it does not certify eligibility or the legally payable benefit. Use the actual offer-letter provision when available.
For example:
- CTC includes basic salary
- CTC includes employer PF
- CTC includes gratuity
- Remaining amount becomes allowance or monthly gross salary
So two offers with the same CTC can have different monthly in-hand depending on whether gratuity is included and how basic salary is set.
How to read an offer letter
Check these points before accepting an offer:
- Is gratuity included in CTC?
- What is the basic salary?
- Is DA applicable?
- Is employer PF also included in CTC?
- Is variable pay included in CTC?
- What is the fixed monthly gross salary?
Bottom line
Gratuity is valuable, but it is not monthly take-home pay. Use the Gratuity Calculator to estimate the amount, and use the India CTC calculator to see how it affects monthly in-hand salary.
