Watch visual guideA FIRE number calculator estimates how much corpus you may need to become financially independent. FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early, but the same calculation is useful even if you do not plan to retire early.
Use the FIRE Number Calculator to enter monthly expenses, current investments, monthly investment, expected return, inflation, and safe withdrawal rate.
FIRE number formula
Annual expenses = Monthly expenses x 12
FIRE number = Annual expenses / Safe withdrawal rate
For example, if annual expenses are Rs 12,00,000 and the withdrawal rate is 4%:
FIRE number = Rs 12,00,000 / 0.04 = Rs 3,00,00,000
This is the corpus needed in today's expense terms. The calculator also projects future expenses using inflation.
Why inflation matters
If expenses rise over time, the future FIRE target can be higher than today's number.
For example, monthly expenses of Rs 1,00,000 today may be much higher after 10 or 15 years if inflation averages 5% or 6%.
Use the Inflation Calculator to understand how current expenses may grow over time.
Years to FIRE
The calculator projects your corpus by adding monthly investments and applying expected returns. Each year, it compares projected corpus with the inflation-adjusted FIRE number.
Years to FIRE is the first projected year where:
Projected corpus >= Projected FIRE number
If the target is not reached within the projection window, the result shows 60+ years.
Safe withdrawal rate
The safe withdrawal rate is the percentage of corpus you assume can be withdrawn every year in retirement.
Common planning examples use 3% to 4%, but the right number depends on:
- Asset allocation
- Retirement duration
- Taxes
- Inflation
- Market volatility
- Flexibility to reduce expenses
A lower withdrawal rate creates a higher FIRE number but may be more conservative.
