Watch visual guidePF is one of the biggest differences between CTC and in-hand salary. The confusing part is that every company may not calculate PF the same way.
Some employers cap PF wage at Rs 15,000 per month. Others calculate PF on full basic salary. Some payslips may show a custom PF wage.
Employee PF
Employee PF is deducted from your salary. The common rate is 12% of PF wage.
If PF wage is capped at Rs 15,000 per month:
- Employee PF = 12% x Rs 15,000 = Rs 1,800 per month
If PF is calculated on full basic salary of Rs 45,000 per month:
- Employee PF = 12% x Rs 45,000 = Rs 5,400 per month
The second case reduces monthly in-hand more, but increases retirement savings.
Live calculation for this guide:
Monthly In-Hand
₹94,276
Annual In-Hand
₹11,31,312
| Deduction | Annual | Monthly |
|---|---|---|
| Employee PF | ₹21,600 | ₹1,800 |
| Professional Tax | ₹2,400 | ₹200 |
| Income Tax | ₹0 | ₹0 |
Employer PF and EPS split
Employer contribution is commonly shown as 12% of PF wage, but it may be split into:
- Employer EPF share
- EPS pension share
EPS is commonly estimated at 8.33% of PF wage, capped to the wage ceiling. The remaining employer contribution is shown as employer EPF.
This matters because employer PF is often included in CTC. It is part of total compensation, but it is not monthly cash in-hand.
Capped PF vs full-basic PF
Capped PF usually means:
- Lower employee deduction
- Higher monthly in-hand salary
- Lower PF accumulation
- Employer PF may be Rs 1,800 per month
Full-basic PF usually means:
- Higher employee deduction
- Lower monthly in-hand salary
- Higher PF accumulation
- Employer PF can be much higher when basic salary is high
What to check in your payslip
- PF wage
- Employee PF deduction
- Employer PF contribution
- EPS pension contribution
- Whether employer PF is included in CTC
- Whether PF is capped or calculated on full basic
Bottom line
PF is not just a deduction. It changes monthly in-hand, CTC structure, employer cost, and long-term savings. Use the EPF / PF Contribution Calculator to compare capped, full-basic, and custom PF assumptions before judging an offer.
