Education Loan EMI Calculator: Moratorium Interest and Repayment
2026-07-10 - 2 min read
An education loan calculator helps estimate EMI after the study period or moratorium. This matters because interest can accumulate before regular repayment starts.
Use the Education Loan Calculator to enter loan amount, interest rate, study plus moratorium months, repayment tenure, processing fee, and repayment start month.
Education loan EMI formula
Once repayment starts, EMI is calculated using the standard EMI formula:
EMI = P x R x (1 + R)^N / ((1 + R)^N - 1)
Where:
- P = repayment principal
- R = monthly interest rate
- N = number of repayment months
For an education loan with moratorium:
Moratorium interest = Loan amount x monthly interest rate x moratorium months
Repayment principal = Loan amount + moratorium interest, if the interest is capitalized
Example
Suppose:
- Loan amount = Rs 12,00,000
- Interest rate = 10.5% per year
- Study plus moratorium period = 48 months
- Repayment tenure = 10 years
The moratorium interest is estimated first. If that interest is added to the loan, EMI is calculated on the higher repayment principal.
Capitalized vs paid separately
If moratorium interest is capitalized, it becomes part of the repayment principal. This can increase EMI and repayment-period interest.
If interest is paid separately before EMI starts, the repayment principal remains closer to the original loan amount, but the borrower still pays that moratorium interest as cash outflow.
