Car Loan EMI Calculator: Down Payment, Interest, and Total Cost
2026-07-10 - 3 min read
A car loan calculator helps you estimate monthly EMI before you finalize a vehicle purchase. It is useful because the showroom price is only one part of the decision. Down payment, exchange value, interest rate, tenure, and processing fee can change the real monthly cost.
Use the Car Loan Calculator to enter vehicle on-road price, down payment, exchange or trade-in value, interest rate, tenure, and processing fee.
Car loan EMI formula
Monthly EMI is calculated using the standard EMI formula:
EMI = P x R x (1 + R)^N / ((1 + R)^N - 1)
Where:
- P = loan amount
- R = monthly interest rate
- N = number of monthly payments
For car loans:
Loan amount = Vehicle on-road price - Down payment - Exchange value
Example
Suppose:
- Vehicle on-road price = Rs 15,00,000
- Down payment = Rs 3,00,000
- Exchange value = Rs 1,00,000
- Loan amount = Rs 11,00,000
If the interest rate is 9.5% and tenure is 5 years, the calculator estimates EMI, total interest, and repayment schedule month by month.
Why down payment matters
A higher down payment reduces the financed amount. This can lower:
- Monthly EMI
- Total interest paid
- Loan-to-value or finance percentage
However, a higher down payment also means more cash is blocked upfront. The right balance depends on emergency savings, existing EMIs, and expected running costs.
Processing fee impact
Many car loans include a processing fee. The calculator estimates:
Processing fee = Loan amount x processing fee percent + flat processing fee
Upfront cash outflow = Down payment + processing fee
This keeps the EMI estimate separate from the cash you may need before the loan starts.
